Create Custom Invitations Using A Logo & Photo

Tiki gods can bring a lot to a Hawaiian-themed party.

Something seems missing from the stacks and stacks of invitations that choke the shelves of the local card store. A sense of individuality and personality is lost when you pick out a generic card off these shelves, but infusing personality into an invitation can require some time that all your guests will appreciate. Creating a photo card and logo can be a fun way to announce a party. The work you put into your card will be a welcomed reminder to your guests that you are going to create a party that will be talked about fondly for years. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

The Tiki-Themed Logo in Photoshop CS3

1. The waves should have some crash to them.

Drag the Hawaiian dancers, wave and the Tiki god picture files onto the Photoshop CS3 icon. Each file should open up within windows.

2. Adding small elements like Hawaiian waves into a logo can go a long way.

Use the Lasso tool to make a selection around the Tiki god picture. Copy and paste it onto the wave picture. Cut and paste an ellipse from the wave picture with the Elliptical Marquee tool. Delete the background wave layer. Merge the Tiki god layer and the waves layer by pressing Command + E (Control + E on a PC).

3. Get creative and add Hawaiian flora into the mix.

Create two copies of this layer by dragging the new layer onto the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers panel. Select the top copy and go to "Filter," "Stylize," "Find Edges." Change the Blending mode at the top of the Layers panel from "Normal" to "Multiply." Go to "Filter," "Artistic," "Cutout." Adjust the settings here if needed, then click "OK." Press "Shift" and click on the other layer with the effect to merge these.

4. Sepia can add both age and texture to this logo.

Go to "Image," "Adjustments," "Photo Filter." Under the "Filter" menu, select "Sepia." Make the density 100% by sliding the slider to the right.

5. Cut and paste this layer onto the Hawaiian dancers picture and type in the the phrase you want your guests to see. Frame this with the torches picture. Save this as a JPEG file. Print this out or email it.

The Distressed Invite Look in Illustrator CS3

6. A Hawaiian invite can benefit from a distressed design.

Open up Illustrator CS3. Place the Tiki god picture into the working area and click the triangle next to the "Live Trace" button at the top of the page. Change the Mode to "Color" and click "OK."

7. Click on the "Expand" button and go to "Object," "Ungroup." Click and hold to make a selection; be sure not to select any vectors within the actual Tiki god. Move the selection up, down or to the side. Repeat this to create the distressed effect. Do this with the waves picture. Merge these together to create the logo.

8. This is the look and edge that you should strive for.

Add the Hawaiian dancers picture behind this logo and use the Eraser tool to create a fringe on the Hawaiian dancers picture.

9. Making it look like a postcard can add a lot of fun to your card.

Type your message. Print it out or email it.

Cut, Tape and Copy Method

10. Handmade invites can make your guests feel special.

Print out pictures of Hawaiian dancers, a Tiki god, waves and torches. Cut out these pictures.

11. Keep in the Hawaiian spirit by looking at different examples of luau art and objects.

Tape these pictures how you would like them arranged. Scan them in a scanner onto your computer. Print the picture out in black. Make some tea and stain this picture by dipping it in the tea water. Allow to dry, then burn the edges slightly.

12. Silhouetted trees also can convey Hawaii.

Cut strands from a grass skirt and glue them onto tan paper. Glue the picture onto this and glue words onto the picture.
