Create Free Personal Invitations

Party organization depends on invitations to alert guests of the upcoming event and help you plan for the number of guests you will entertain. Boxes of store bought invitations can be costly and lack the personal touch found in custom cards. You can make your own invitations with ordinary office supplies to save money and create exactly the invitation you want. Basic instructions will help you create a simple invitation; however, you can personalize the invitations with additional arts and crafts.

Instructions

Designing the Invitation

1. Open a new blank document in your word program, such as Microsoft Word.

2. Repeatedly press Enter to move your cursor halfway down the page. If your left margin shows 8 inches, stop the cursor at 4 inches.

3. Click 'Insert' on the toolbar and scroll down to 'Picture' to choose 'Clip Art.'

4. Choose a Clip Art picture, such as a birthday cake. Double-clicking your mouse on the picture will place it in the document where your cursor stands.

5. Move your mouse pointer over the corner of the Clip Art picture to fit the size to your invitation. The picture should fit in the lower left quadrant of the document.

6. Click your mouse on the document, outside of the Clip Art. This will set the picture into your chosen position.

7. Press Enter to place your cursor beneath the Clip Art picture so you may add desired text, such as "You're Invited!"

8. Click 'Insert' on the toolbar and scroll down to 'Text Box.'

9. Scroll your mouse pointer over the corners of the inserted text box to position it. The text box should fit in the lower right quadrant of the document.

10. Click your mouse inside of the positioned text box to enter desired text. For example, you can type, "Dear (Name), Please join us for the celebration of (Event), on (Date), at (Time). We are receiving guests at (Location). Please RSVP by phone to (Phone Number). We hope to see you there!"

11. Print the document onto preferred paper. Cardstock provides a sturdier finish; however, ordinary printer paper is sufficient.

Folding the Invitation

12. Hold the invitation in front of you, so the printed picture and text appear on the bottom half of the paper.

13. Bend the blank top half of the paper backwards until the paper folds in half, and form a crease. You should now see only the picture and text on the paper.

14. With the paper folded in half from top to bottom, fold the left side over the right side. Your picture should face the text with nothing visible on the outside of the card.

15. Place stickers over the right and bottom seams to seal the invitation until opened by the recipient. This lets the card serve as its own envelope.

16. Rotate the closed card counterclockwise. The stickers should appear on the left and bottom seams of the card.

17.Write the mailing addresses on the card just as you would an envelope.
