Create An Island Brochure

Create a brochure about an island.

Our world is home to more than 2,000 islands, spread across oceans and forming anything from less than 100 meters to over 17,000 square kilometers of land mass. Whether you're trying to promote tourism, construction sales or conservation efforts about an island, a handy way to distribute information is through a brochure. Brochures are traditionally single page pieces of paper printed on both sides and folded twice to make a column. It is an ideal way to share information about an island.

Instructions

1. Visit the island's chamber of commerce or local town website for information on the island's history, acreage, native plants and animals, activities and population. Larger, inhabited islands that serve as common tourist destinations will have more information available, such as the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce page, which offers a directory of on-island businesses, real estate listings and vacation information.

2. Search for the island on an island website such as Island Directory, with an alphabetical list of islands and islands sorted by country.

3. Open a desktop publishing program and select the "Brochure" template. Scroll through the brochure designs and double-click one to open it on the workspace.

4. Highlight a placeholder headline on the front of the brochure and type over it with the island information, such as "Welcome to the Islands of Vanuatu." Continue typing over the other headlines throughout the brochure with new headers, such as different island names (Vanuatu has islands named Merig, Aore, Efate, Epi and Ambae, for example) or topics such as "Real Estate," "What to Do" and "Best Times to Visit."

5. Highlight the placeholder text article below each headline and type over the program's text with the island information. Repeat to fill all of the placeholder text boxes.

6. Click once on a placeholder image on the brochure and press the "Delete" key to remove it. Click the "Insert" tab or menu and select "Picture." Browse to a digital photo of the island and double-click it to add it to the brochure. If you don't have actual photos from the island, click the "Clip Art" button and type "island," "ocean," "palm tree" or another term into the "Search for" box. Click "Go," scroll through the results and double-click a graphic to add it to the brochure. Repeat to replace and add more images throughout the brochure.

7. Highlight the placeholder contact information on the brochure and type over it with your own, such as the chamber of commerce address, travel agency website, real estate email address or other information. To remove the contact information boxes entirely, click once on each box and press the "Delete" key on the keyboard.

8. Click the "File" tab or menu and select "Save As." Type a name for the brochure and save it to the computer.
