Cut A Stacked Fondant Cake

The serrated knife's chiseled edge makes it easy to slice through cake.

Fondant is used to decorate cakes because it can easily be molded, comes in several colors and is forgiving. Fondant is draped out on cakes to make them smooth and clean, giving you an extra layer to cut through. Cut through fondant cake as you would any other cake, but use a serrated knife to get even, clean slices. Slice round fondant cake into wedges and square or rectangle cakes into rectangular pieces. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Remove the top tier of the cake if it is at a wedding. This top tier is sometimes eaten by the married couple on their first anniversary.

2. Take off any decorations that are inedible and set them aside.

3. Start cutting the fondant cake at the second tier with a serrated knife in a sawing motion. The serrated knife will slice through the fondant layer as well as the rest of the cake without smashing it. If the knife becomes really dirty, dip it into some warm water to clean it. Wipe it down with a clean cloth and continue slicing the cake.

4. Start with the point of the knife and cut the cake in half if it's a round stacked cake. Cut the cake in half the opposite way to create quarter-pieces of cake. Cut each of the quarters in half to create eights. If you want slices smaller, cut the eights in half a again to create sixteenths. The smaller the cake slices are, the more fragile and temperamental the fondant will be, so work slowly.

5. Remove the slices of cake and begin cutting the next layer in the same manner.

6. Begin cutting a strip of cake about 2 inches in from the edge of a square or rectangle cake. Continue slicing long strips across the cake until you get to the other end. Then slice 1- to 2-inch strips going the other way, in a grid. Use the same sawing motion that you would when slicing though a round cake.
