Make A Luau Pig Cake

Make the cake even more festive with a colorful floral lei.

You can surprise your party guests by making a three-dimensional luau pig-shaped cake for a summertime luau party, family barbecue or other celebration. Use a 3D pig-shaped cake pan for the project or shape the pig on your own from a couple of round and dome-shaped cakes. Decorate the cake with a coating of pink fondant and add a floral lei around the pig to make the cake a bit more festive. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Prepare two cake mixes in one or two mixing bowls and pour the cakes into cake pans greased with vegetable shortening or butter. Use two 6-inch round cake pans and two medium-size round oven-safe bowls. Bake the cakes according to package directions and cool in the pans for 20 to 30 minutes. Remove the cakes from the pan and bowls and let cool to room temperature.

2. Shape the pig. Place the domed-shape cakes side by side on a cake tray. This forms the head and body of the pig. Cut a rectangle, about half the width of the domed cake and 3 inches long, from one of the 6-inch cakes.

3. Place the rectangle against one dome-shaped cake, on the opposite side of the other domed cake. This forms the pig's snout.

4. Cut the remaining 6-inch cake in half and place one on either side of the pig's body to make the legs.

5. Spread a thin layer of buttercream icing over the entire pig-shaped cake. This coat of icing will catch any loose cake crumbs. Place the cake in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.

6. Roll out a large package of light pink fondant to about 1/16-inch thick. Drape the fondant over the pig cake and shape it around the pig's head, body, snout and legs.

7. Knead the leftover pieces of pink fondant. Roll it out to about ¼-inch thick and cut two small triangles from the fondant. Moisten one edge of each triangle and press the triangles gently against the top left and right sides of the pig's head to make ears.

8. Roll a small piece of fondant between your fingers and coil it around a wooden dowel. Let it dry for three to four hours. Insert a toothpick into one end and insert the free end of the toothpick into the backside of the body to make a curly tail.

9. Cut facial features for the pig. Make two 1-inch, white buttercream circles above the snout for the eyes. Roll out a small piece of blue fondant to 1/16-inch thick and cut two circles with a diameter of about 3/4-inch. Place these circles onto the buttercream circles. Roll out a small piece of black fondant to 1/16-inch thick and cut out four circles with a diameter of about ½-inch each. Moisten the back of each circle with water and press two of the circles against the blue circles. Press the remaining two circles against the front of the snout to make nostrils.

10. Wrap a large floral lei around the cake to make the luau pig festive.
