Wedding invitations make a first impression on wedding guests. Paper invitations are traditional, but many materials can be used. Using silk to make a wedding invitation can add an elegant touch to a wedding. Silk can be treated and printed with a bubble jet printer or the fabric can be printed by a professional silk screener. The invitations can be rolled up and mailed in a tube.
Instructions
1. Buy silk fabric with a smooth surface. Each invitation will need two 6.5" x 10.5" pieces of silk. Calculate accordingly.
2. Design the text of the wedding invitation on a computer in a word processing program or design program. The text should be designed for a 5.5" x 8.5" piece of paper.
3. Cut fabric into 6.5" x 10.5" pieces, two for each invitation.
4. Print text for invitations onto half the fabric using bubble jet set solution and freezer paper. (Refer to manufacturer's instructions).
5. Place the printed piece of fabric on top of the right side of an unprinted piece of fabric with the printing facing the middle.
6. Sew the fabric pieces together (wrong sides out) along each side of the fabric (1/4" seam allowance). The top and bottom should not be sewn.
7. Turn the fabric right side out and iron flat. The printed text for the wedding invitation should be visible.
8. Sew along the top and bottom of the fabric (1/4" seam allowance).
9. Cut dowel rods for each invitation into 6.5" pieces. Sand the ends smooth.
10. Glue one dowel to the top edge of the text side of the fabric. Roll the fabric down around the dowel and glue until the dowel is covered in fabric. ½" of each dowel should be sticking out of the fabric.
11. Repeat process with the bottom of the invitation rolling fabric around the dowel up instead of down.
12. Let glue dry completely.
13. Roll the dowels toward each other until entire invitation is rolled up. Put the invitations in cardboard tubes for mailing.
