Get Started In Knife Throwing

Almost any knife can be thrown, but knives specifically for throwing are best for beginners.

Knife throwing is a popular sport that involves sticking a knife into a target at a distance by throwing. Most knife throwing techniques involve a complex understanding of knife rotations and knife physics in order to master the skill. That can make it very overwhelming for a beginner to approach knife throwing. However, getting started is as simple as finding a knife and a target.

Instructions

1. Select a knife throwing style. One simple style for beginners is the John Bailey method. There are many different styles of knife throwing. Picking a specific style and focusing on it will make starting out much simpler.

2. Select your first throwing knife. Throwing knives come in all shapes and sizes, but for beginners the best knives are generally the simplest. Elaborate knives can be complicated to throw. Beginners should throw knives that are weighted so that their center of gravity is directly in the middle of the knife.

3. Find a target. A target can be something as simple as a log or a piece of plywood. Softer targets will be easier for beginners. Make sure that it is in a wide open space where you will not damage anything or risk injuring yourself or others.

4. Try your first throw. To use the John Bailey method, stand with your left foot forward and your right foot back. Turn your right foot outward at a 90 degree angle. Grip the knife with all fingers around the handle, and the thumb at the top. Lift the knife up and swing your arm downward. Release the knife the moment the tip is pointing at the target.

5. Practice.Throw on a regular basis. Knife throwing is a very difficult skill to master. Even with the most detailed instruction, you will still have to experiment on your own to develop your throwing technique.
