Fashion a hula skirt from a spare brown grocery bag for an inexpensive costume. Wear the hula skirt for Halloween as part of a Hawaiian ensemble. Or, craft these skirts to wear at a Hawaiian-inspired party or luau-themed backyard bash. For a tropical theme birthday event or slumber party, set up hula skirt stations where party guests can create their own costume piece. Then encourage everyone to try hula dancing while wearing their homemade skirts.
Instructions
1. Measure your waist to determine how many brown paper grocery bags you will need. An average size brown paper grocery bag is 12 inches wide and 7 inches deep, so one bag will reach 38 inches around your waist when cut apart. Use additional bags if needed.
2. Flatten the brown paper bags along the seams. Cut across the bags at the bottom just above the folded base so you are left with brown paper cylinders. Cut them apart along the seam from the top to the bottom. Spread the bags out into rectangles.
3. Spray paint both sides of the bags using green spray paint.
4. If using more than one bag, position the rectangles end-to-end. Tape the adjoining edges using masking tape so you have one solid piece of brown paper.
5. Cut the paper to the length needed to go around your waist. Allow an extra inch or two to ensure the skirt won't come up short; any excess can be trimmed later.
6. Cut 1-inch-wide strips vertically across the bottom edge of the bag. Make the cuts all the way up to 6 inches from the top of the skirt.
7. Cut 3-inch-wide flowers in the shape of daisies out of colored construction paper. Use vibrant colors, such as red, yellow and purple, for the flowers. Spray the flowers using spray glitter. Glue the flowers around the top outside edge of the skirt using white glue. Overlap the edges of the flowers.
8. Flip the paper over so you are looking at the inside of the skirt. Stretch a length of yarn across the top of the skirt behind the paper flowers. Cut the yarn so it extends 8 inches from each side. Attach the yarn to the back of the skirt 1 inch from the top edge using hot glue. Allow the glue to dry before tying the hula skirt around your waist using the yarn.
