Make A Cosmetic Bag From Satin Fabric

Create a custom satin cosmetic bag to bring essentials with you anywhere.

Cosmetic bags made at home allow you to customize your bag to your own color, pattern and size preferences. Make a large satin cosmetic bag to accommodate your makeup needs on a long vacation or make a small bag just large enough to store a few essentials. Satin cosmetic bags are simple to make and can be completed in less than an hour, even with little previous sewing experience.

Instructions

1. Place an 8 1/2-inch by 11-inch piece of paper on a flat surface in front of you and turn the paper so it forms a wide, rather than tall, rectangle. Fold the paper in half by folding the right side over to the left. Cut the piece of paper along the fold line and use one of the rectangles as a template for your fabric.

2. Trace around the paper template onto two pieces of muslin fabric, two pieces of satin fabric and two pieces of cotton batting and cut out each of the pieces.

3. Place one of the satin rectangles on the flat surface and cover it with the cotton batting and then the muslin fabric. Align all of the edges and pin the pieces together.

4. Use a straight stitch to sew one long side and the two short sides of the rectangles together. Fold over approximately 1/2 inch of the satin side of the side not yet sewn so it covers the muslin side. Use a zigzag stitch to sew the fold in place.

5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 with the other set of rectangular fabric squares.

6. Lay one of the fabric rectangles down so the satin fabric is on the top. Cover the rectangle with the other rectangle, with its satin fabric facing downward.

7. Sew one of the long seams and then the two short seams together using a whip stitch by hand or a zigzag stitch on the sewing machine. Reach inside and pull the fabric right-side-out, so the satin fabric is now on the outside of the bag.

8. Attach a 3-inch strip of velcro to the insides of the purse in order to close it. Apply a line of glue from a hot glue gun to the back of the velcro strip and place it approximately half-an-inch into the purse and press firmly. Apply glue to the corresponding velcro strip in the same way and place it in the same spot on the opposite side.
