Make A Pretend Island Brochure

Creating a brochure is not difficult; it simply takes time. You must decide whether to create this brochure on the computer, which would look most professional, or by hand.

Instructions

Creating the Brochure in Microsoft Publisher

1. Open Microsoft Publisher. A wizard should appear with options listed in categories. Find the section labeled "Publications Types," and select "Brochures."

2. Browse through the brochure design options, and select your preferred layout. The screen should load with a predesigned brochure.

3. Within each brochure in Microsoft Publisher are suggested areas for headers, text boxes and pictures. First, decide which topics about your island you would like to point out. Suggestions include accommodations, history, climate, interesting facts, things to do, culture, currency and important facts.

4. Replace each of the laid-out headers with your own preferences, keeping in mind that there are two sides to the brochure; flip it over electronically by clicking the page 2 symbol at the bottom of the window. Now, you can begin filling in the text boxes with the appropriate information. Make these appealing to the eye by filling up the entire text box---you can change the font size if necessary---and spell-checking your work.

5. Select "Insert" on the toolbar at the top of the screen to add additional text boxes, then click "Text Box." You can click and drag the blank area where you want to place it.

6. Replace the publishers' preprogrammed pictures with your own. The front fold of the brochure, the page headed "Product/Service Information," should contain the most illustrative picture so that the audience might take immediate interest in the island. You may also choose to include contact information on this fold or on the back, depending on how much extra space you have.

7. The color theme of your brochure can be changed, as well. To do so, locate "Format" on the toolbar, and scroll down to "Color Schemes." Select which set of colors matches best.

8. When you are finished proofreading, editing and revising the brochure, print on a colored printer. For better results, print on thick, quality paper.

9. Fold the brochure into thirds: Begin with the title page face down, and fold the right third inward, then the left third on top of that, making sure to align the edges during each fold.

Creating a Handwritten Brochure

10. Begin with a blank sheet of paper. Fold it into thirds hot-dog-style, precisely creasing the left third on top of the right third. Since the brochure should always open to the left first, the fold on top at this point will be your title page.

11. Create an attractive design or picture on this first page, leaving room for an adequately large display of the island's name. You may also choose to place contact information on this fold, or you can leave it for the back fold.

12. Subsequent folds---do not forget to use all six---should contain informative text and pictures describing the island: accommodations, history, climate, interesting facts, things to do, culture, currency and important facts, for example. Be sure to start each set of information with a title, and try not to overwhelm the reader with too much information on a single page.

13. Liven up your island brochure with decorations or colors to catch your audience's attention.
