Homemade Birthday Decorations

Make homemade birthday decorations with little time and few supplies, which will save money. With just a few things that you probably have laying around your house, you can decorate for a fun and colorful birthday party. Does this Spark an idea?

Homemade Tablecloth

Find an old white or light-colored sheet that you no longer need (twin size usually works fine for most tables). Using craft paints and a sponge, blot different colors of paint all over the sheet, making a colorful tablecloth. If you have a specific theme, such as "sports," paint sporting objects onto the sheet, such as baseballs, footballs, golf balls, basketballs or soccer balls. It is best to use a sponge to blot the shapes onto the sheet, because using a brush to paint will cause the sheet to stiffen to much. Blotting on the paint will keep it from becoming too thick and hard.

Confetti and Glitter

Using multiple colors of construction paper and a paper punch, you can make a lot of confetti in a short time. Confetti, along with glitter, looks festive scattered around the food table and eating areas. If you are sticking with a specific color and theme, then one color of confetti also works well. If you are throwing a more sophisticated party, buy metallic colored paper in golds and silvers that would make fun yet more formal looking confetti.

Personalize Your Party

One way to personalize the party for the birthday honoree, is to place the letter of his first name on solid colored paper cups that the guests will use. Using Elmer's Glue, write out the first letter of the birthday person's name in a capital letter. Then sprinkle glitter over the top of the glue so it sticks. Blow on the glue to help it dry. Once dry, tap the cup to remove any loose glitter off the cup. You can use this same idea with helium balloons.

With white or colored butcher paper, make a large banner to welcome your guests. Write out "Happy Birthday" or other birthday wishes with metallic markers or paint and a sponge. The glue on confetti and glitter (as done above). Hang the banner outside so guests can see it from the road. Attach helium balloons to the corners of the banner. In case of bad weather, hang the banner in your front windows so guests can still see it from outside or in the entry way so the guests see it first thing when they walk in.
