Make An Ariel Costume

Mermaid costumes are popular with girls and women of all ages, especially around Halloween. One of the most popular mermaids among girls is Ariel from Disney's The Little Mermaid. While Ariel and other mermaid costumes can be purchased in stores, they are often expensive. In addition to this, it can be hard to find the right size. Thankfully, it's easy to make an inexpensive Ariel costume. With the proper materials and little bit of direction, anyone can make an Ariel costume.

Instructions

1. Cut out two pieces of purple fabric that are each in the shape of seashells. Each of the seashell shapes should be 6 inches tall and 6 inches wide.

2. Fold under the edges of the seashell fabric pieces 1/2 inch and sew the folds in place. Sew the seashells to the front of the bra cups.

3. Cut out a piece of shimmery green fabric that is 40 inches long and wide enough to wrap around the hips plus 1 inch.

4. Fold the green fabric piece in half, bringing the 40 inch edges together, with the right sides of the fabric facing each other.

5. Sew the 40 inch edges of fabric together, forming a tube of fabric that will become the skirt.

6. Fold over one of the raw edges 1/2 inch and sew the fold in place. This will be the bottom of the skirt.

7. Fold over the remaining raw edge of the skirt 3/4 inch. Sew this fold down to form the waistline of the skirt, leaving a 1 inch opening in the seam.

8. Cut a piece of elastic that is just long enough to wrap around the waist. Thread this elastic piece through the waistband of the skirt, using the 1-inch opening. Gather the fabric as needed.

9. Sew the ends of the elastic together. Sew the 1-inch opening in the waistband closed.

10. Cut out two semi-circles of shimmery green fabric that are each 12 inches wide at the base and 6 inches tall in the middle. These will form the fins.

11. Sew one fin to each side of the bottom of the skirt. Hem the curved edges of the fins and pair the outfit with a red wig or dye the hair red.
