Make a bum costume from old clothes.
Bum costumes are a popular Halloween disguise. Yet, there are many other occasions to dress up like a bum. Children's and adult plays, dress up days at school and Crazy Days promotions for stores and business districts are just a few situations where such a costume is needed. The best part of making a bum costume is that it is easy, inexpensive and also lends itself to the creator's imagination.
Instructions
1. Stretch out a T-shirt around the neck front to make the shirt look old and worn. Rub some face paints on the front of the shirt to make it look dirty and stained. Place a pillow under the T-shirt at the stomach area when wearing the costume.
2. Glue some pieces of scrap fabric on the elbows of the button shirt. Put patches of fabric in other places on the shirt as you wish. Layer patches of fabric to make the shirt look like it has been patched many times, if desired. Use scissors to cut some of the buttons off the shirt. Roll up the sleeves to fit the wearer, or cut the sleeves shorter.
3. Cut holes in several places in the baggy pants. Glue fabric patches onto the pants at the knees and other places, as desired. Roll up the pant legs to fit the person wearing it, or cut the pant legs off at different levels. Thread a length of rope through the pant belt loops and tie at the front for a belt. Tie a piece of rope from a back belt loop and over the shoulders to a front belt loop for a suspender. Make two suspenders, one to go over each shoulder.
4. Choose an old hat with a brim. Cut holes in the hat to make it look ragged. Rub some face paints into the hat to create a stained look.
5. Find mismatched socks to wear. Use socks with holes in the cuffs or choose a comical combination of knee-high socks. Plan to wear more than one pair of socks if you plan to look like a bum who wears all his clothes at once. Roll the cuffs down to show all sock layers.
6. Glue patches on at least one bandanna. Stuff a patched bandanna into a back pocket of the pants or a front pocket of the shirt. Tie a bandanna around your neck, if you wish.
7. Paint a beard onto your face using face paints. Smear some paints onto your face and hands to look dirty, if desired.
