Make a colorful doll cake from your child's favorite fashion doll.
A birthday doll cake provides the birthday child with a creative cake to enjoy at a party and an extra doll birthday present to bring home when the cake has been eaten. The cakes are easy to make and can be completed in three to four hours time. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Instructions
1. Mix two store bought cake mixes in two separate bowls. Pour one mix into a 10-inch round cake pan and the other into a round oven-safe bowl. Bake the mixes according to the directions on the box. When the cakes are finished baking, remove them from the stove and allow them to cool in the pan and bowl for 15 minutes. Remove the cakes from the pan and bowl and place the 10-inch round cake on a round plastic cake tray. Remove the bowl cake by tipping it upside down carefully onto a large plate.
2. Cut off any protrusions on the top of the 10-inch round cake.
3. Put food coloring into a bowl of butter cream icing spread on the 10-inch round cake. This cake will be the stand for the doll. Put another food color into a second bowl of butter cream icing for the bowl shaped cake. This will be the doll's skirt.
4. Spread a thick layer of butter cream icing onto the two cakes and smooth the icing with a frosting spatula. Put the cakes in the refrigerator for 30 to 60 minutes then take them out and spread another layer of icing on each cake. Use the back of the frosting spatula to create swirls throughout the entire upside-down, bowl shaped cake. This will end up resembling waves in the princess dress.
5. Insert three, 4-inch wooden dowels into the 10-inch round cake and press the bowl cake onto the dowels, centered on the bottom cake.
6. Use a plastic wrap to cover the legs of a doll and push the doll down into the center of the top cake. If the doll has long hair, it should be done up in a ponytail to keep the hair from touching the cake. Fill a pastry bag with the icing from the dress and use a star-tip to pipe the upper portion of the dress onto the doll.
7. Decorate the dress' skirt with heart, star and other shaped candies.
