Advertise A Block Party

Get out and spread the word

After you set up all the details of your neighborhood block party, the last thing to do is spread the word! You can create invitations, flyers and posters to distribute. Kids can help advertise too, by handing out flyers at the bus stop or neighborhood community center. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Organize a Block Party

1. Check with the city and neighborhood council. Each governing body has its own set of rules and regulations for block parties. As a resident, you are expected to abide by all of them.

2. Enlist the help of your neighbors. Planning a party for many people requires lots of time and energy that can be dispersed among several people. You could even form a neighborhood committee and make it an annual event.

3. Select a theme. You can celebrate school's end, spring break or a major holiday that extends into a long weekend. Try Labor or Memorial Day.

4. Set up games and entertainment. You can use things neighbors already own like basketball hoops, street hockey or trampolines. If you want to hire entertainment, opt for fun things like dunking booths, face painters and clowns.

5. Make it a potluck! Tell neighbors to bring their favorite dish. You can also host competitions like chili or pie cook offs where neighbors can vote for their favorites.

6. Distribute flyers to several neighbors. Have each neighbor hand the flyers out to their side of the street and act as the contact person for any questions regarding the block party.

7. Leave flyers or invitations in your neighbors' mailboxes. It's an easy way to reach a lot of your neighbors and they can come to you if they have questions.

8. Post reminders around the neighborhood. Light posts, gate houses, bus stops and neighborhood swimming pools are highly visible.

9. Check to see if your neighborhood has its own Web site or blog online. Lots of large, planned communities may have their own Web addresses or blogs to communicate important neighborhood information. You may be able to advertise the party there.

10. Call neighbors to personally invite them, especially those that have not put in an RSVP. Sometimes new neighbors are unsure if they should attend. Make them feel welcome and encourage them to bring friends.

11. Spread the news by word of mouth. Good news travels fast and neighbors will be excited at the notion of having a party so close to home.
