Honeydew melons are a type of muskmelon. The honeydew melon has a white rind, and the fruit inside is sweet, coming in colors including green, yellow and orange. It is a warm-season crop that does well if planted after the last change of frost. Harvesting a honeydew means taking it off the vine at the right time. Instructions
1. Inspect the melon's rind. The rind should be a creamy white in color when the melon is ripe.
2. Press your fingers against the end of the melon that is furthest away from the vine. When the honeydew melon is ripe, the far end gives slightly when it is pressed.
3. Cut the honeydew melon away from the vine using a sharp knife. If you are planning to use the honeydew melon immediately, make the cut directly next to the rind. If you are not planning to use the honeydew melon right away, leave 1 inch of stem on the melon; this prevents it from rotting.
4. Store the melon in your refrigerator. In cool temperatures, they can last for up to a week.
