Backyard barbecues can be built according to many different designs. Here is one that will be able to satisfy the heartiest appetite. You can personalize this grill to your own specifications. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Check local fire regulations. There may be some codes or laws governing where exactly a barbecue like this can be, and you also need information on any permits required to build one.
2. Dig out an 8-inch-square trench at a size of your choosing. You need to make sure the end result conforms to the base size of a 16-inch-long concrete block. This means that your trench should be at least six inches wide and a multiple of eight inches long.
3. Lay the first row of blocks inside the trench, making sure they are flush with the surface of the ground. Level them off using your level as you lay them in the trench. If they are too deep, add sand beneath the ones that are not level, making them flush. If they aren't deep enough, dig out a little more dirt.
4. Put your first row of blocks down over the foundation going all the way around, even across the front. Once you are done, you will have enclosed the area that will be your fire pit or burning foundation.
5. Fill in the fire pit area. Lay down your fire bricks inside the first row of blocks. Cover the fire bricks with sand and fill in all the cracks in between each brick. You will build your fires on top of these bricks.
6. Stack the concrete blocks until they are roughly 40 inches high. Leave the front open. We are not using mortar to hold the bricks in place, but just the weight of the bricks. You will need to be precise and even with your placement.
7. Intall the grate stand inside the pit. Stack the concrete blocks at least three high. If you want a higher pit, you can go higher, but you need to remember this will necessitate a bigger fire.
8. Place your grate on top of the interior block stacks. If you want a sturdy grate, stack two concrete blocks end to end on each side. This will hold it in place firmly. If you plan on taking it off and cleaning it regularly, you may want to skip that step.
